Between the To and Fros
Written by Rosanna Joslin
Having moved from Sydney to rural Mongolia at the age of nine, I struggled with the concept of home. When I was 17, I wrote an article about how I discovered that part of my identity.
I designed this book to visually tell that story through an emotive and illustrative book, for other “Third Culture Kids,” and sending agencies, to provide insight into a common "TCK" experience. Readers can get a glimpse into my childhood, life in Mongolia, and how I found identity between the to and fros.

“The nagging questions persisted: “Where is home?” “Who am I?” “Where do I belong?” The feeling of being adrift, of lacking a solidsense of self, became a constant companion.“ Growing up as a TCK is a unique experience that often results in a search for identity and a sense of belonging. For the author, the journey began when she moved with her family from sunny Sydney, Australia, to the icy steppes of rural Mongolia at the age of nine. The move was difficult and unsettling for the girl, as she struggled to adapt to new languages, cultures, and ways of life. Feeling rootless and lost became a norm, but this book explores how she eventually found her identity and sense of belonging. The book features poetic illustrations that vividly depict the author’s emotional journey and the diverse places she lived. Each artwork enhances the story’s depth and significance, conveying the young girl’s experiences, and providing a vivid and evocative backdrop to a tale of identity, belonging, and resilience.
Recipient of a scholarship, this moving story was first published by the NRT Relocation & Referral Services, ‘Share Your Moving Story’ initiative in 2018.”
